Global warming is a concern for all of us and our leaders are taking steps to address greenhouse gas emissions. Data confirms that the EU has smashed their goals for 2020, which is fantastic news! They have now set new targets for 2030, hoping to continue their good work.

In the U.S. we also have ambitious targets for 2030. So, what do our leaders hope we’ll achieve by 2030 and what can we do in the meantime?

What’s happening in the U.S.?

Like his European counterparts, President Biden has set some bold goals in his ‘green energy plan’. His target is for 80% renewable energy generation by 2030 and completely carbon-free electricity by 2035. Immense investment is being plowed into these visions, with BloombergNEF reporting a record $141 billion spent last year.

However, in 2021, natural gas production hit a record high in the U.S. of 34.15 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) or 93.57 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/day),  mostly attributed to improved production techniques. Gas prices were driven down, resulting in increased natural gas use for primary energy production. Figure 1 illustrates its use relative to other primary energy sources and shows how much of the energy sector relies on fossil fuels:

Playing your part

It’s true that there is already a real push for renewable energy sources on both sides of the pond, but gas turbine-based combined-cycle power plants are expected to remain one of the world’s most important options for generating electricity for the immediate future.   If you’re responsible for a gas turbine, there are simple steps you can take to reduce emissions now. The bonus is that you will save fuel and money at the same time.

A clean, efficient gas turbine compressor is an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While installing an air filtration system is a great start, even the best filter is unable to completely remove impurities such as oily vapors and unburned hydrocarbons. These foulants coat the inner workings of the gas turbine compressor then fine solids and salts become suspended and quickly build up. Airflow is compromised, heat levels can rise, and fuel consumption and output of greenhouse gases increase.

The best solution to address the problem and regain lost efficiency is a regular cleaning schedule using specialist products. A combination of on-line and off-line cleans is recommended for best results.
